Apple may not launch new AirTag in 2024

Apple fans hoping for a second-generation AirTag in 2024 might have to wait a bit longer. According to a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple appears to be hitting the brakes on its item tracker plans, with a potential launch now pushed to 2025.
Gurman, known for his reliable Apple leaks, explains that several factors might be contributing to this delay. Firstly, Apple reportedly has ample unsold inventory of the first-generation AirTag. Launching a new version so soon could lead to market saturation and hinder sales of the existing model. “Apple retail store back rooms and Apple device storage warehouses are still full to the brim with AirTags,” notes the report.
Gurman emphasises that Apple is “in no rush” with AirTag 2, preferring to wait until they have a truly compelling reason to refresh the device. Gurman’s claims match of analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who had also suggested that AirTag 2 will arrive in 2025. “The mass production schedule for AirTag 2 has been postponed to 2025,” Kuo had said on X.
The current AirTags, released in 2021, have generally received positive reviews for their sleek design, accurate tracking, and integration with the Find My app.
When and if Apple does launch the new AirTag, it is expected to feature the second-generation of ultra wide band chip. Apple integrated the new ultra wide band chip in iPhone 15, Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2. The new UWB chip offers longer range and better precision tracking.

What this means for AirTag users

So, what does this mean for AirTag users? If you’re happy with your current AirTags, there’s no need to rush out and replace them. They’re still effective at tracking your belongings, and Apple is likely to continue supporting them with software updates for some time to come. However, if you’re looking for the latest and greatest in item tracking technology, you might want to consider waiting until 2025 to see what Apple has in store.
