After India’s team led by Rohit Sharma was bowled out for 213 runs against Sri Lanka, Shoaib Akhtar, the former Pakistani fast bowler, angered fans by accusing India of “fixing the game” during the Asia Cup 2023.
Following the allegations of “game-fixing” in the Asia Cup 2023, Shoaib Akhtar has found himself in a tight spot
In a video on his YouTube channel, Shoaib Akhtar questioned why India would lose a match where a win would confirm their place in the final of the Asia Cup 2023, despite the way the first innings went. Sri Lankan spinner Dushmantha Chameera claimed 5 wickets, dismantling India’s top order. As soon as India was bowled out for 213 runs, several fans messaged former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, suggesting that India had intentionally “fixed” the game and was attempting to lose it. However, Akhtar dismissed these claims.
“I don’t know what you guys are doing. I’m getting memes and messages saying India has ‘fixed the game,’ that they are intentionally losing to end Pakistan. Are you okay? They (Sri Lanka) bowled their hearts out. Chameera and Asalanka bowled their hearts out. Did you see that 20-year-old kid? He scored 43 runs and took 5 wickets. I’m getting calls from India and other countries, saying India is intentionally losing,” Akhtar said in a video on his YouTube channel, praising the performance of Sri Lanka in the match that he watched.
Akhtar questioned fans as to why India would want to lose a match where a win would confirm their progress to the final. He also commended India’s spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who took 4 crucial wickets to turn the match in his team’s favor.
“Why would they lose? They want to go to the final. You create memes without any reason. This was a fantastic comeback by India. The way Kuldeep Yadav bowled was exceptional. Look at Jasprit Bumrah, see how he defended a small target in the match,” Akhtar said.
He also criticized Pakistan’s performance in the final match against India, citing a lack of fight and raising questions about the fitness of fast bowlers Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, and Shaheen Afridi.
“Velalage, a 20-year-old kid, showed a fight. He batted and bowled; he did everything. Our players (Pakistan) didn’t show that fight. Our fast bowlers didn’t perform. When was the last time they played 25-30 ODIs in a row? Then we expect Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah to bowl 10 overs and not get injured. I want Pakistan to fight back. This was embarrassing,” Akhtar said.
India has already reached the final, and if Pakistan wants to secure the crucial second spot in the tournament, they will have to defeat Sri Lanka in their next match.
