Just hours before India’s Chandrayaan-3 moon mission was set to complete, Tesla CEO and one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, Elon Musk, responded to it. In a post on Ex (formerly Twitter), he mentioned that the cost of Chandrayaan-3 is less than the budget of ‘Interstellar’.

Musk remarked that the mission is “good for India.” The post on Ex stated that the budget for India’s moon mission is $75 million, while the producers of ‘Interstellar,’ led by Matthew McConaughey, invested $165 million in the project. The Vikram lander of Chandrayaan-3 is scheduled to touch down on the moon’s surface on Wednesday evening.

On the launch day, news agency Reuters reported that Chandrayaan-3 was developed with a budget of just $75 million (approximately ₹615 crore). Subsequently, an ANI report provided more information, stating that the approved cost of Chandrayaan-3 is ₹250 crore (excluding launch vehicle cost).

Such comparisons have arisen before, when Indian users on Ex claimed that the budget of Chandrayaan-3 is less than that of the movie ‘Adipurush’, starring Prabhas and Kriti Senan (₹700 crore).

However, business analysts have considered the film’s budget quite low. Official figures are not available.

Chandrayaan-3 includes a 2-meter-long lander designed to carry a rover near the southern pole of the moon, with expectations for it to remain functional for about two weeks during a series of experiments.

The development phase of Chandrayaan-3 began in January 2020, with plans to launch in 2021. However, due to the unexpected delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the mission’s progress was hindered.

In 2020, ISRO successfully placed an orbiter in the Chandrayaan-2 mission, but its lander and rover were lost in an accident, which Chandrayaan-3’s landing attempt aims to overcome.
