Electricity Bill Scam: Across the country, many mobile users are receiving messages as part of a new scam, which includes phishing links and could lead to a significant loss if you make a mistake.

“Dear Customer, your electricity will be cut from the electricity office tonight at 9:30 PM. This is because your last month’s bill hasn’t been updated. Please contact our electricity officer at 82603XXX42 immediately. Thank you.”

Have you also received such an SMS or message on WhatsApp? If yes, be cautious and do not call the number or click on any links in these messages. This is a new form of scam targeting mobile users, incorporating phishing links, and it could cost you dearly.

What is the Electricity Bill Scam?

The Electricity Bill Scam is a new method used by fraudsters. In this online scam, scammers send fake text messages that resemble official electricity department communications. These messages threaten people with immediate electricity disconnection if they fail to pay their overdue bills. This puts people in a panic, forcing them to make hasty payments without thinking it through.

These messages are often cleverly crafted to appear legitimate, making it challenging to distinguish between the real and fraudulent messages. Scammers can use official logos and language, and they may even include the recipient’s name and account number, making it difficult to differentiate between genuine and deceptive messages.

Many individuals have fallen victim to this scam. Scammers have emptied the bank accounts of countless individuals across the country. In one reported case, a victim received a call from someone claiming to be an electricity department official. The caller informed the victim that their electricity bill was overdue and that if immediate payment was not made, their electricity would be disconnected.

When the victim inquired about how to make the payment, the caller sent a link to download the “TeamViewer Quick Support” mobile app. As soon as the victim downloaded the app, the scammers gained access to their bank account and siphoned off the entire sum (a total of 4.9 lakh rupees).

  1. Be cautious of unsolicited messages. If you receive a text message or email claiming that your electricity bill is overdue, do not respond or click on any links. Instead, contact your electricity provider directly using the phone number or website provided on your bill.
  2. Do not make payments through links or phone numbers provided in unsolicited messages. If you are uncertain about the validity of a payment request, contact your electricity provider directly to confirm the amount due and the correct payment methods.
  3. Be cautious of warning signs of a scam. Scammers often use urgency, threats, and essential language to create panic. They may ask for personal information like your bank account number or social security number. If you receive a message with any of these warning signs, it is likely a scam.
  4. Keep your personal information private. Never share your personal information with someone who contacts you unsolicited. This includes your name, address, phone number, bank account number, and social security number.
  5. Report suspicious scams to your electricity provider and authorities. If you suspect you have fallen victim to a scam, immediately contact your electricity provider and the police.
