Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) Yojana, which began on December 1, 2018, aims to provide annual financial assistance of Rs. 6,000 to landholding farmer families in three equal instalments.

Sources have informed CNBC-TV18 that the central government has reported savings of Rs. 10,000 crores under the PM-Kisan Yojana in the past year, primarily due to the removal of ineligible beneficiaries.

Sources mentioned that these savings came to light after a thorough “clean-up” of the PM-Kisan database, resulting in the removal of approximately 1.72 crore individuals considered ineligible under the scheme.

Sources also indicated the possibility of considering the inclusion of sharecroppers, tenant farmers, and landless farmers within the ambit of the PM-Kisan Yojana.

It has been suggested that there is a possibility of increasing the instalments under the PM Kisan Yojana. However, it’s important to note that the government has not proposed any changes to the scheme as of now.

Specifically, any proposal would need to come from the Ministry of Agriculture.

The objective of the PM Kisan Yojana, which began on December 1, 2018, is to provide annual financial assistance of Rs. 6,000 to landholding farmer families in three equal instalments. The responsibility of identifying eligible farmer families under the scheme lies with state governments, and the financial assistance is directly transferred to their bank accounts.

Under the scheme, all landholding farmer families with cultivable land in their names are eligible to receive benefits.

With this distribution, the total amount transferred to beneficiaries since the inception of the scheme has now exceeded Rs. 2.59 lakh crores.
