On Saturday evening, Rahul Gandhi rode a motorcycle from Leh to Pangong Lake in Ladakh to commemorate Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

A day after riding a motorcycle to Pangong Tso from Leh, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the shores of the lake on Sunday.

“Rajiv Gandhi sacrificed his life for the country. We have gathered here to remember him,” said Vikas Rasool Wani, the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, to news agency ANI.

Sharing a video on Twitter, Rahul Gandhi wrote in Hindi: “Father, the dreams you had for India shine through these priceless memories in your eyes. I walk on your footsteps – I understand every Indian’s struggle and dreams, I’m listening to the voice of Mother India.”

Rahul Gandhi is currently on a visit to Ladakh – this is his first visit to the region after it was made a Union Territory following its separation from Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019, and there is a possibility that he might visit Kargil next week.

The former state of Jammu and Kashmir was also reorganized into a Union Territory, and its special status under Article 370 of the Constitution was revoked.

Opposition leaders in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) said that Gandhi will arrive in Leh on Monday after spending two days on his two-day trip on Thursday, and then extend his stay in the region for four more days to cover Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, and Kargil district.

After covering a distance of more than 130 km on a motorcycle and staying overnight at Pangong Lake at an altitude of 14,271 feet, Gandhi is planning a symbolic celebration on the occasion of Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary on Sunday.

Rahul Gandhi shared images of his motorcycle campaign in Leh to Pangong on his social media accounts, saying, “On the way to Pangong Lake, about which my father used to talk, it is one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

Namgyal said, “On Sunday, they will leave for Nubra Valley for overnight rest. It is possible that he may meet ordinary people, including shopkeepers and farmers, on the way.” He said that Gandhi will return to Leh on Monday.

Although the journey was described by his party supporters in Leh as “non-political” and without consideration for the upcoming parliamentary elections next year, Rahul Gandhi was warmly welcomed by party workers upon his arrival on Thursday.

In addition to watching a football match between two local clubs, he also interacted with party supporters and spoke with youth.

A Congress spokesperson said that Gandhi will visit the Kargil district on Monday or Tuesday and is likely to interact with party workers and people, especially the youth.

Gandhi’s visit to the district is significant as the LAHDC elections are scheduled to be held in Kargil on September 10. The National Conference and Congress have already announced a pre-poll alliance for the hill council elections.
