Shoaib Akhtar He stated that it’s a big warning for India that if they want to win the Asia Cup for the record eighth time, they will have to put up their best performance.

Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar commented on Sunday that Bangladesh had given India a significant “wake-up call” ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka. India, who was the first team to secure their place in the final, suffered a defeat to Bangladesh in the last Super 4 match in Colombo on Friday.

Before heading to the World Cup, India gave some playing time to players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj, resting prominent players like Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and the renowned Krishna.

This move holds significance, and the way India began – with Bangladesh at one point being 59/4 – it seemed like they would easily secure a win. However, Bangladesh’s captain Shakib Al Hasan (80) and Mahmudullah Riyad (54) formed a strong partnership during the chase of 266 for victory. Their fifth-wicket partnership of 111 runs brought them back into the game.

Looking at the nature of the Colombo pitch, many would argue that it was a winning total. The way Bangladesh started with the new ball – Tanzeem got Rohit Sharma out for a duck in the second ball of the innings and then sent newly inducted Tilak Varma back for 5 – it looked like India had a long way to go for their 266-run target. Shubman Gill and KL Rahul contributed well with a partnership of 57 runs for the third wicket, taking the innings forward. However, Ishan Kishan couldn’t stay for long, and Bangladesh took the lead in the match.

Shakib dismissed Suryakumar Yadav (26), who was looking good, while wickets kept falling at the other end, with Gill standing tall like a rock and guiding India towards the target. This right-handed batsman scored a marathon century after 121 runs and took the match to the wire.

Gill and Akshar Patel threatened to snatch the game away from Bangladesh, but the rare adrenaline-packed crowd in the stadium got Gill to lose his wicket. The right-handed batsman, who played 121 runs in his innings, got out after a marathon partnership. Akshar tried to take India further ahead, but due to several injuries, his march was halted, and he got out in the last over. Bangladesh won this match by six runs, sealing a fantastic end to the tournament.

Akhtar remarked, “We didn’t expect India to lose to a team like Bangladesh, but they did. It’s a shameful defeat. Pakistan lost to Sri Lanka. They are out of the Asia Cup, which is even more embarrassing. India still has a chance. This is a big warning for them to wake up and ensure that they win the final. This isn’t going to be a cakewalk. This is not Mr. Khala’s home, where India can easily win. It’s not going to be that way.”

He added on his YouTube channel, “Sri Lanka is on the field to beat India. And in the World Cup, it can be anyone’s game. India has been shaken by Bangladesh.” In the Super 4 clash between the two teams, India defeated Sri Lanka by 41 runs.
