Tilak Varma made a mark in his T20I debut against West Indies at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. In the first T20I of the five-match series on Thursday, August 3, when India faced West Indies, it promised an exciting clash between stars of the Indian Premier League and their Caribbean Premier League counterparts.
Both teams had enough firepower in their tanks to expect a high-scoring contest for the fans. However, uncertainty prevailed about how successful the batsmen from both sides would be on the pitch that was used for the third ODI between the two sides, as it proved to be a challenging surface for stroke-making throughout the game. After winning the toss, West Indies decided to bat first and posted 149 runs, losing six wickets in the process.
Chasing the target of 150 runs, India was struggling at just 28 runs on the scoreboard and had lost both their opening batsmen. Enter debutant Tilak Varma, who proved why he deserved to be part of the playing eleven.
He wasted no time in settling down and went after the bowlers. When he dismissed Alzarri Joseph with a square leg sweep, he achieved the highest score for an Indian on debut. On the other end was Suryakumar Yadav, who had sent England’s Jofra Archer to the stands in March 2021 during his international debut.

On the last ball of the 11th over, the 20-year-old attempted to pull Shimron Hetmyer, who was standing at fine leg, but his innings looked attractive until it lasted.
However, the Hyderabad-born player couldn’t stay for long to guide India to victory, but his short but charismatic journey helped him achieve an unprecedented milestone. Making his T20I debut for Hyderabad, he became the Indian with the highest strike rate – 177.27 – while scoring a minimum of 30 runs.
In his 22-ball 39-run innings, he hit three sixes and became the Indian with the joint-most sixes (3) on T20I debut, along with Rahul Dravid and Murali Vijay, going past them in style
