On Tuesday in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, Nitish Kumar commented on the ‘importance’ of female education in population control. He described how an educated woman can influence her husband’s actions during intercourse, affecting childbirth. He stated, “More births are due to a husband’s actions. However, with education, a woman knows how to control it.” Nitish Kumar also mentioned a decrease in birth rates from 4.3 to 2.9 and projected a further decline to 2.

 

These statements triggered various reactions, with some demanding his resignation due to the perceived ‘indecent’ nature of his remarks.

 

Nitish Kumar’s Clarification: Apology and Clarification in the Media

 

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Nitish Kumar extended his apology for offending, emphasising that his intention was not to hurt anyone. He reiterated the necessity of education for population control and the empowerment of women.
