Taylor Swift may be ruling over the music business as its biggest superstar, but that has not defended her from social media trolling. The singer, who spent Christmas Day in the stands, cheering for her footballer boyfriend, Travis Kelce was subjected to nasty Twitter posts blaming her for The Chiefs’ huge defeat against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The singer was spotted arriving with her parents for the Kansas City Chiefs‘ game and heading straight to the VIP box, where she joined a host of other players’ wives and families.
The cameras panned to Taylor several times during the game, with commentators even mistakenly calling her Kelce’s ‘wife’. From cheering for the boys to expressing her frustration over the defeat, the singer was captured on camera at her candid best.
Dressed in Christmas colours, Taylor was seen in a red top and a checked skirt. She even wore a Santa hat with Kelce’s jersey number on it. After the disappointing loss, the couple was seen leaving the game hand-in-hand.
Shortly after the game, ‘Taylor Swift curse if real’ began trending, with trolling taking jibes at the singer and blaming her for Kelce and The Chiefs’ underperformance at the game.
“So the Chiefs really are snake bitten aren’t they? I’m starting to believe the Taylor Swift Curse theory,” read a tweet.
Another said, “The Taylor Swift curse is real, yall.”
“So are we going to acknowledge the Taylor Swift curse or…?” asked another.
According to reports, fans of the NFL star began spreading the theory of the ‘Taylor Swift curse’ after the team began underperforming at the games. While at the beginning at the romance the singer was considered as Travis’ ‘lucky charm’, fans later grew weary of her presence at the matches while linking the team’s poor performance on the field to the singer. Taylor was even blamed for Kelce’s injury on the field.
However, Swifties were not letting trolls have the last word. Many took to the comments section to defend the singer saying, “Grown men on Twitter having a full on meltdown over the “Taylor Swift curse” because she is *checks notes* watching a football game.”
Another said, “So here’s what we’re not going to do: blame Taylor and say she’s has a curse over the team losing. These men are paid millions to catch and throw, and refs can be stupid sometimes. She’s there to support him, that’s it. Blame your team.”
Another said, “I’m rooting for the Chiefs to win not because of@tkelce but cos I’m afraid once they lose they will not blame kelce, mahomes, or the team, they will blame taylor swift for being a ‘curse’.”
Indian Swifties also joined the virtual debate and defended Taylor and linked her situation with Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma. The desi actress was also subjected nasty social media trolling while she was dating Indian cricketer Virat Kohli. Even years after their marriage, the actress finds herself targetted by trolls calling her a ‘panauti’ whenever Virat underperforms on the field.
“So basically Taylor Swift is the American version of Anushka Sharma …” read a tweet.
Another said, “So Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce is basically the white people version of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli? Coool cool cooool”
“Travis Kelce/Taylor Swift on one side of the world & Virat Kohli/Anushka Sharma on the other,” read another post
