India’s former opening batsman, Wasim Jaffer, has extended his support for Yashasvi Jaiswal to make his T20 debut for India in the second T20 match against the West Indies

scheduled for August 6, 2023, in Guyana. Jaiswal, who impressed in Test cricket against the West Indies with a brilliant 171 in his debut innings, has struggled to find form in the previous T20s.

India lost the first T20 match in Trinidad by 4 runs, falling short of the target by just 150 runs. Both opening batsmen, Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill, were dismissed for just one run each. Although Tillakaratne Dilshan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya performed well with the bat, India lost crucial wickets at crucial moments and eventually lost the contest.

Ishan Kishan, who scored three consecutive half-centuries in the previous ODI series, had a forgettable outing, managing only 6 runs off 9 balls. Discussing India’s probable playing eleven ahead of the second T20I, Wasim Jaffer suggested the option of including Yashasvi Jaiswal in place of Ishan Kishan. The 21-year-old, who made his mark in Test cricket against the West Indies, scoring 171 runs in his first innings, could be a valuable addition to the Indian playing eleven.

“I want to see Yashasvi Jaiswal. He should play as an opening batsman. I would like to see Jaiswal instead of Ishan Kishan. Ishan Kishan’s T20I form worries me. He has not scored well in the last 15 matches, and his strike rate has also been quite low. This is a different format (T20I). Jaiswal had been in good form in ODIs. The IPL season wasn’t exceptional for him either,” Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.

Jaiswal, who has had some significant scores in domestic cricket and was picked by Rajasthan Royals for a record-breaking price of 625 runs in IPL 2023, was included in the Indian squad for the first time.

“Why not give a chance to a player who performed exceptionally well in the IPL? He won the emerging player award and looked assured. I will look forward to that change. The first T20I was played on a difficult pitch, so expecting them [Kishan and Gill] to play in that free-flowing mode is too much to ask. It will be crucial to see the pitch for the second T20I. If it’s good, our batsmen will play well,” Jaffer added.

India will also play the third T20 match on August 8 in Guyana, while the last two T20 matches will be held on August 12 and 13 in Florida.
